All that Benningsen ordered and all that was carried out as a result tended only to oppose systematically the attacks of Davout and St. Hilaire, opposing bayonet to bayonet and firearm to firearm but did not address any unexpected move which came out of the ordinary, and did not forestall a blow out of the blue on some point which was deemed out of danger from the enemy.
And actually, how were things going? Davout continued to press on, capturing more and more of our left flank, while the center and right, not moving at all, were shedding small portions of infantry, cavalry and artillery to help out the retreating left wing, not undertaking anything that might suddenly surprise the enemy. But even the fact that we were opposing the enemy right flank was bringing us no small advantage: by postponing a decisive defeat, because it gave time to Lestock's corps to arrive on the battlefield. |
