On the evening of 20 February, the fort capitulated after a ten-day siege. The French occupied it immediately and, just as quickly, violated the accord they had signed with the Ottoman defenders. Bonaparte had had no intention of keeping his word. Contrary to the terms of the armistice, the men who surrendered were disarmed, and about 900 were more or less persuaded to join the French forces rather than perish in the desert on their way home (they all deserted at the first opportunity9). The Mamelukes were sent back to Egypt under escort. The rest went on to Syria where, given that the agreement with the French had been broken, they joined the Ottoman forces.
Etienne-Louis Malus, a doctor who attended the plague victims at Jaffa, vividly recalled his impressions: The soldiers cut the throats of men and women, the old and the young, Christians and Turks, anyone who had a human face fell victim to their fury. The noise of the massacre, broken doors, ruined houses, the sounds of shots and of the cleaning of swords, the shrieks of women, father and son one on top of the other (on the same pile of bodies), a daughter being raped on the cadaver of her mother, the smoke from the burnt clothes of the dead, the smell of blood, the groans of the wounded, the shouts of the victors who were quarrelling about the loot taken from a dying victim, angry soldiers who redoubled their blows the more their victim cried out in order to sink at last, satiated by blood and gold, without further feeling, on top of a heap of dead.
What is not as well known, however, is that a large number of young girls and women were kidnapped, taken to the French camp and raped. Quickly, though, fights broke out among the troops over them. Bonaparte, hearing of this, ordered that all the women were to be led into the hospital courtyard by midday, on pain of a severe punishment. The order was punctually carried out; it was believed that they would be sent back into the ruins of the town where they would find refuge. However, a company of chasseurs was assembled to execute them. 28
