Madame Sans-Gêne (Madame Carefree)
Giordano's opera opens in Paris in 1792, where the laundress Caterina, the carefree Madame Sans-Gêne of the title, shelters a fugitive Austrian nobleman, the Count of Neipperg, and provides laundry for Napoleon, as the revolution continues. The second act, in 1811, finds Napoleon at the height of his power, with Caterina's husband, formerly Sergeant Lefèbvre, now Duke of Danzig. Caterina incurs general displeasure by her failure to adapt to new circumstances of elegance. The third act puts an end to suspicions of intrigue between the Empress and Neipperg, and to the difficulties of Caterina and her husband.
Like Andrea Chénier the opera makes use of appropriate revolutionary musical material in the first act. Giordano's realistic comedy was conducted by Toscanini at its first performance, but has won no lasting place in repertoire. |
