这篇军事格言是Burnod将军在1827年收集整理的。英文版1831年发表,从时间上看应早于“战争艺术”的出版时间。但”战争艺术“的原则部分在1807年就发表了( <a href="http://www.usregulars.com/jomini1.html" target="_blank">http://www.usregulars.com/jomini1.html</a> ), 有可能这位将军把其中有关拿破仑的原则章节直接算拿破仑自述。

由此述看来大部分可能还是拿破仑讲的(只是可能)。拿破仑用兵很讲”无形“,其原来的旧将巴伐利亚的雷德元帅曾和威灵顿论兵,提到他昔日问拿破仑有什么战略秘诀时,拿破仑答他从来没这个东西。不过如果想拿破仑用兵20多年,每年搜集4,5个,也能够凑一百多了。
