à la bavaroise        “In the Bavarian style”; breeches cut with a horizontal front flap.
à la marinière        “In the marine style”; cuffs with vertical openings along the outseams.
à la matelote        “In the style of sailors”.
à pont levis        Breeches cut with a horizontal front flap. The front flap is raised and lowered, hence the smililarity to a pont levis(drawbridge); formerly, heeled shoes.

aide-pointeur        f. Assistant gunner.
aigrette        f. A plume or tuft.Usually means a plume or tuft shaped like a shaving brush.
aiguilette        f. Aiguillette, aiglet; shoulder cord. Originated as knots of ribbon owrn to hold the shoulder belt of the XVIIIth c. French equipment in place. By the mid-XVIIIth c., aiguilettes were most commonly found on the uniforms of mounted troops and to distinguish officer cadets in the XVIIIth c. In the cavalry, the were known as plattes, in the dragoons, as rondes.

aileron        m. Decorative scrolls on the sides of the cimier of a carabinier or cuirassier helmet.

allonge        f. A piece of stuff used to eke out anything. A chain with a hook attached to one end used to suspend the scabbard from the sword belt.
allure        f. Conduct, demeanour; way of walking.
alvéole        f. Socket.
amande        f. Knuckle-bow of a sword hilt.
âme        f. Chamber of a gun, mortar, howitzer or other smooth-bore firearm.
amorce        f. Fine powder used to prime the vent of a gun or musket.
ampoulette        f. XVIIth c. term for the stock of a musket.
amusette        f. A large calibre musket mounted on a small carriage. Originally, a light long-barrelled gun firing a 1 to 11/2 lb. ball. Saxe applied the term amusette to a small fieldpiece of his own invention.
ancien        adj. Old; antique; veteran.
ancienneté        f. Seniority, length of service.
ange        m. Literally, “angel”—French military idiom for chain shot.
anneau        m. Ring; loop; link; collar. Sometimes used as a term for a stirrup iron.
anse de piéce        f. Dolphin on a smooth-bore cannon barrel.
anspessade        m. Anspessade (lance-corporal); short lance.
appointé        m. Probationery rank; soldier receiving the pay of a higher rank as an award for lengthy or distinguished service.
apprenti        m. An apprenti or trainee was a trained specialist in the companies of sapeurs, mineurs, ouvriers, canoniers, or bombardiers who served at a lower rate of pay until a vacancy occurred in his trade.
arborer le drapeau blanc        “To show the white flag” - to surrender or capitulate or to hold a parley between two opposing armies.
arbre        m. Spindle or shaft.
archer        m. Archer. Private soldier of the maréchausée (see this term)
ardillon        m. Tongue or catch of a buckle.
argent-faux        m. False silver. See maillechort.
argenté        adj. Silvered; silvery; plated.
argenture        f. Silver-plating; silvering.
arme        f. Weapon, arm; rifle; arm of service (e.g. artillery).
arme à canon lisse        f. Smooth-bore firearm.
arme blanche        f. Side arm; edged weapon. Could also mean cavalry or “cold steel”.
arme d'hast        f. Polearm(i.e. esponton, hallebarde).
arme rayée        f. Rifled gun or weapon.
armes des pièces        fpl. Tools used in gunnery such as scoops, rammers and sponges.
armes du Roi        fpl. Royal coat-of-arms or insignia.
armoires        fpl. Armorial bearings; coats of arms.
armurier        m. Armourer.
arrière-ban        m. The feudal levy of France, last called out in 1758.
arrière-garde        f. Rear guard.

bandoulière        f. A belt, strap or band of leather or cloth worn over the shoulder and from which is suspended a weapon. Term current in the late XVIIth c. and early XVIIIth c.
bannière        f. Banner. In feudal times, the bannière carée or square banner was the symbol of a knight commanding 25-80 lances.
baraque        f. Temporary hut or lodging in a winter camp.
bariolage        m. Medley, mixture.
barre        f. Tape, ribbon, bar. Suspension strap for bayonet scabbard.
barre de derrière        f. Rear suspension strap for a bayonet or sword scabbard.
bas        m. Stocking; lowest part of anything.
bas-officers        mpl. N.C.O.’s.
basane        f. A tanned and supple sheepskin used for saddlery or the leather strapping of cavalry overalls or charivaris.

basque        f. Skirt or trail of a garment.
basin        m. Fine lightweight cotton fabric; dimity.
bassinet        m. Pan of a musket lock; pan of a mortar.
Bastonais        m. Cdn. A term of derision for inhabitants of the New England colonies current in New France during the XVIIth to XVIIIth centuries.
bât        m. Pack, pack saddle, pack load. Hence, the English “batman” or officer’s servant.
batiste        f. Batiste or cambric. A sheer and soft cloth of fine weave.
bâton        m. Baton; stick, staff, pole, rod.
battant de crosse        m. Lower swivel on a musket strap.
batterie        f. Frizzen of a musket lock; siege battery. Term originally meant a gun position, later came to mean a unit of artillery.
batterie de tambour        f. Drumbeat.
baudrier        m. Shoulder-belt; XVIIIth c. shoulder sword belt; also flag belts and drum belts.
bavare        f. Seam, chipped edge.
bavaroises        mpl. Uniform coat lapels which were folded and buttoned back to display the coloured lining.
bavière        f. See mentionnière.
bélière        f. Suspension strap for scabbard attached to the sword belt.
bidon        m. Oblong shot or shell; can; container; canteen, gourd or water bottle in white metal.
biseau        m. Bevel, champfer, bit.
biseauté        adj. Beveled, champfered, basiled.
bisonne        f. Greyish cloth utilized for linings.
bleu        m. The colour blue; a recruit or conscript.
bleus        mpl. Supporters of the Gribeauval system of artillery in the great controversy which raged among French artillery officers in the latter decades of the monarchy. They were known as bleus from the colour of the gun carriages of the Gribeauval system.
blocage        m. The “blocking” or molding of a hat.
blonde        f. Blonde or tan lace.
bois        m. Wood; musket stock.
bois de lance        m. Lance-pole or shaft.
boisseau        m. Bushel. An archaic unit of volume equivalent to 13.01 litres. A boisseau is also French army idiom for a shako.
bombardier        m. An artillerist serving on ordnance (such as mortars or howitzers.) firing explosive shells.
bombe        f. Bomb; rounded part of a helmet.
borne éclatante        f. Exploding bomb insignia or badge.
bombe enflammée        f. Flaming bomb insignia or badge - the grenadier’s insignia.
bonnet        m. Bonnet, cap. Originally, a soft supple hat without support.
bonnet à flamme        m. A bonnet de police of soft material with a long flamme or tail worn by dragoons until 1762.
bonnet à poil        m. Fur bonnet or cap.
