Oman:
It is sad to have to confess that the French did not keep to the terms of the capitulation. That Lannes could not restrain his men from plunder, as he had promised, was hardly surprising.
……
Two in especial, Padre Basilio Bogiero, the chaplain of Palafox, and Santiago Sass, a parish priest, were shot in cold blood two days after the surrender. Public opinion in the French ranks was convinced that they, more than any one else, had kept the Captain-General up to the mark. Palafox himself was treated with great brutality.
Rudorff的War to the Death:
Lannes kept faith with most of the terms of the capitulation although there was one notable example of their breach. Shortly after the fighting had ended, both Santiago Sas and Palafox’s old tutor, Don Basilio, were killed by French soldiers and probably under orders. Daudevard de Ferussac stated that Basilio had been taken from a monastery at night and offered the opportunity to place his talents at the disposal of King Joseph. When he refused, he was bayoneted and flung into the Ebro from the bridge. Daudevard himself had seen a body floating by the bridge and was told that it was the priest’s. Palafox was treated with great harshness. Even while it was uncertain whether he would live or die, officers threatened him with being shot if he did not sign documents governing capitulations in various small towns outside Saragossa.
